Now, more than ever, women are leading empowered lives. Yet, while women empowerment has come a long way, and women are enjoying a much improved quality of life, there remains a serious threat to their health. Breast cancer, which mainly affects women, accounts for 16% of overall cancer cases in the Philippines, and about 30% of cancer cases among women. Doctors estimate that three out of 100 Filipino women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
While findings on the causes of breast cancer remain inconclusive, doctors have identified certain risk factors such as being overweight, bearing no children by the age of 30, family history of breast cancer, excessive drinking of alcohol, and even having early menstruation and late menopause. But despite this grim scenario, a breast cancer diagnosis is not hopeless. One of the most important factors that could increase a patient’s survival rate is early detection. Having regular check-ups, which could lead to detection of early-stage cancer, improves relative survival by 27% to 47%.
As a footwear brand with a serious mission to empower women from all walks of life, FitFlop is determined to join the fight against breast cancer with the help of its partner, ICanServe Foundation. A breast cancer advocacy group in the Philippines, ICanServe Foundation stresses the importance of early detection and proper awareness about the disease. Together, FitFlop and ICanServe are thrilled to roll out initiatives that will provide women with the necessary know-how and tools to fight breast cancer.
In line with the celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) this October, FitFlop has launched a special BCAM exclusive – the Petal Ruffle collection, which comes in three silhouettes and colors, and is available in all FitFlop stores nationwide. With part of proceeds donated to ICanServe, FitFlop is hoping to reach more women through their campaign.
As a culmination of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, FitFlop and ICanServe will also be offering a FREE Breast Cancer Awareness talk that includes steps on how to conduct your own breast examination. This event, which is open to the public, will take place in the FitFlop store in SM Mall of Asia on October 24, 2019 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
